The new year is upon us...

Well, the temperature has dropped, and the awful rain is pounding down, so yes, it's definitely the start of the new academic year.

And we have a great year planned for you all....

First up, don't forget that with your memberhip this year, there will be discounts and free stuff - so make sure you get that e-mail to the Students Union (and don't forget to copy us in!!!)

So, to start the year off, we have a lecture by a surprise guest on Thursday the 11th, followed by our first social of the year... a great opportunity to get to know students from all years and courses through the school.

MA&DE's Favourties

Well, we hope you all enjoyed the show, and made it down to the festivities after. Apologies to any who had to wait to get in.... Next year we'll get a bigger venue!! We certainly had a great time.

One of the particularly fun (if rather manic) bits of the evening for us was racing around all the various rooms trying to find who we would give our inaugural Yellow Brick Awards to....

Well, we hope you are all slowly recovering from the horrors of portfolio hand-ins, and are enjoying a well-earned break....

We wanted to interrupt for just a wee second, to invite you and of course, your friends and family, to help celebrate this new found freedom at the opening of the summer exhibition.

Following the opening ceremonies, we shall all be decamping to the Winchester on the Essex Road to party the night away, and welcome in the summer holidays. There's free entry for all, and there will be a number of drinks promos on the night.

Toh Shimazaki lecture

We know you're all busy: model-making, spending some quality time with your computer, or maybe walking around in a hedonistic trance from too much spray mount and coffee. Anyway folks, Tuesday 1st May is one evening worth tearing yourself away from those architectural delights to hear Toh Shimazaki Architecture speak:

There is considerable media buzz about this London practice as they emerge onto the architectural stage. The recently completed OSh House, shortlisted by World Architecture News for International House of the Year, was the only British entry to make the final six.

Toh Shimazaki enriches places and human experiences they come in contact with, through context sensitive and personal architecture of integrity.

Thanks to all those that came out for our launch party and elections on March 8th...swing by the MA&DE board to check out the photos and see if your pretty face is up there!

We are also looking into organising an after party for the End of Year Exhibition Show opening, which is to be held June 21st. If anyone has any suggestions or wants to help out with that, let us know.

Celebration Week Party!

DASD Students!

Celebration Week is upon us, and once it is over, there is to be even more celebrating in Spring House!

On Thursday, MA&DE, your student architecture society, will be throwing a party for all you DASD students.

Once presentations & the lecture are over, make your way up to the studios on the first floor (bringing a bottle of something) and enjoy the merriment.
The building will be open until midnight, so bring your dancing shoes.

MA&DE Membership will be available on the door until 9.30 for £2. This will get you discounted entry into all future MA&DE events, including our current film season.

Brazil Screening Cancellation

Our apologies for the cancellation of last night's screening of Brazil.

This was due to a last minute change in date for the lecture, which we had to accommodate. We will let you know just as soon as we have a new date for this screening.

It continues!

Thanks to everyone who turned up at our inaugral film screening last week. Following a few teething problems, we feel it turned out quite a success.

Because there is a lecture on Tuesday the 27th, our next screening, of Brazil (1985), will be on Thursday March 1st. It will also move to the cinema, because the sound quality is much better there.

Brazil is Terry Gilliam film (Monty Python, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) starring Robert De Niro, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin, Ian Holm and Jonathon Pryce.

In an Orwellian vision of the future, the populace are completely controlled by the state, but technology remains almost as it was in the 1970's. Sam Lowry is a civil servant who one day spots a mistake in one of the pieces of paperwork passing through his office. The mistake leads to the arrest of an entirely innocent man, and although Lowry attempts to correct the error, it just gets bigger and bigger, sucking him in with it.
